10th August - Wolverine Claws

I went to see the new Wolverine film the other night, the best thing about the entire film was the post credit sequence, Its actually the only thing I remember about the whole film, I did thoroughly enjoy it but just think the 2 minutes of extra footage at the end was the best bit. Anyway I was inspired to make these Wolverine claws, I had a go with a few designs and was not too happy but eventually found a YouTube tutorial for these ones here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idgqo61r-dg.

8th August - Scooter

This Scooter is another one I have seen Graham make on his balloon forum, it is made from 13 balloons (I seem to make a lot of my sculptures from 13 balloons for some odd reason). I like the little ribbons coming from the handles and the wheels look wheely good (doh).

27th July - Bunny Ears

Here are some bunny ears on a hairband, easy to make and it only uses 2 balloons, they are a grey 260 and a white 160, it is simple to make and looks really cute. This is the first photo with my new camera as well, I was having so many problems with my last one so decided to take the plunge and get a new one.

21st June - Gru - Despicable Me

Its film Friday again, I didnt have one last week as I was in Cornwall, however I did Captain Barnacles from the Octonauts the other day so he made up for it.

This week we have Gru from Despicable Me, as you can see he has his latest gun invention with him, lets call it the balloononitator. Gru and his gun are made from 18 balloons, mainly black 260s for the body, some 160s for parts of the gun and arms and legs, he has a round balloon for his head and there is a 350 in there somewhere too.

20th June - Pharmacist Joe

Its Joe's birthday today and I have made him into a balloon, he is a pharmacist and this is exactly what I think he looks like when he wanders the wards. He has his syringe of insulin and that is a pink handkerchief in his pocket, its most defiantly NOT his phone, I have also given him a bow tie because bow ties are cool and I think Joe should wear a bow tie.

Balloon Joe is made from about 15 balloons, mainly 260s but there is a 350 for his body and a 160 for his bow tie, his syringe is made from an orange balloon inside a clear balloon.

19th June - Captain Barnacles

Well Shiver me whiskers, sound the Octo-alert, its Captain Barnacles the polar bear from the TV show Octonauts, I know there are many people out there who will be pleased to see this, I seem to remember Arty liking the Octonauts, I hope you all like him.

Captain Barnacles is made from 9 balloon, the head is a round 11" balloon with the body from 260s and then various other bits from other 260s and 160s. I used 3 raisin twists in the white round balloon, 1 for each ear and 1 for his nose.

27th May - Helicopter

This Helicopter is made from 8 balloons, I started with the framework of the main body with some blue 260s and then added in the round white balloon for the windows (a transparent balloon would have been cool here but I don't have any).
The nest step was to add the tail and tail rotor, then I added in the main rotor blades, finally I made the landing struts for it to sit on.

Coming up on June 2nd, I will be doing a live balloon sculpture at the Aspex Gallery in Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth, it is to help celebrate the Camp Bestival Around the World Tour, between the hours of 11am and 2pm I will be creating my biggest sculpture of the year so far (at nearly 6 feet across and 5 feet tall, eeek) there will be lots of other activities taking place in the gallery and I will update you on those nearer the time.

20th May - Raccoon

I have been wanting to make a raccoon for some time and today I finally got my head around how I would do the tail and face. I think he is made from 14 balloons however I did lose count half way through, I am sure it is 14 though, this does include the 11 round balloon for the base and the 2 balloon that make the flower.

13th May - Tank

Back in March I was shown how to make this tank by Graham, I think it looks rather cool so tanks Graham . . . I mean thanks Graham.

It is made from 5 balloons, a 350 makes up the body and turret of the tank with a 160 as the gun, I then add a 260 for the rest of the body and finally another 2 grey 260s for the tracks.

2nd May - Sea Lion

Last week I had an email from Nick, Nick is from Indonesia and is an expert balloon modeller, he does some wonderful creations, his sunflowers are awesome and so are his endangered species balloons, the most amazing thing about Nick is the fact that he is 10, wow I wish I had his talent when I was 10. You can check Nick and his balloons out at his website - http://www.nicorner.com.

I asked Nick if I could replicate some of his balloons and he was kind enough to say yes, so here is the first, a Sea Lion. This sea lion is made from 4 balloons, I used 1 grey 260 balloons for the body and head, the rest of the balloons I managed to use scraps of white, beige and black 260s. Thanks Nick.

30th April - Revolver

For some unknown reason, my mate Clint seems to think I am obsessed with guns, I can't think what gave him that idea, never mind, anyway, onto today's balloon, a gun.

This gun was taught to me by Graham back in March, Its not something I would ever make at a kids party as I am actually pretty anti gun.

This revolver is made from 2 x 160 balloons and does not take too long to make, just a couple of minutes.

26th April - Chicken

My niece is 14 years old today, her name is Hester and she is my oldest niece, earlier in the year she requested that I make a black chicken, she has her own real live black chicken called Blackie so here is her balloon Blackie the Chicken.

This Chicken is made from 10 balloons, It is based on a photo of a balloon chicken I recently saw which was made by Graham Lee (another balloon man), I changed it a little to give her a nest to sit in and some different eyes, I started with the body from 2 x 260 balloons and added an another one for the top of the head, then I added the red bits from another 260 and the beak from yet another 260, the tail came next and then I added the eyes, The nest is a plait of 160 balloons.

Happy Birthday Hester

23rd April - Rhino

I love this little Rhino, Graham showed me how to make it back in March and I just love how he looks, he is made from just 2 balloons, although the white balloon is just an old scrap I found so I guess its only 1 and a bit balloons.

19th April - Whale

I make this whale quite often at various parties, he seems to be quite popular, he is made from 7 balloons, this includes the base which makes him self standing, when I make him at parties I usually only use 5 balloons.

I start with 2 x 350 balloons then add in the fins which are a 260, next I add the water spout which is made from 2 x white 260s and finally the base is added from a 260 and a 350. There is another secret ingredient which makes him self standing but I will let you work that out for yourselves.

17th April - Hippos

Here is a hippo and her baby, I made this after Nat showed me a photo of a couple of hippos.

Each hippo is made from just the 1 balloon, mummy hippo is a 260 and baby hippo is a 160.

3rd April - Phoenix

Here is my second mythological creature and my largest model so far, it is a phoenix, I was inspired to make this after someone made their own version of a phoenix on a balloon forum recently.

It is made from 41 balloons, mainly 260 sized balloons but there are a few 350s in there, for the body and the tops of the legs, also I used a 160 balloon for the feet and the lower part of the beak.

I started with the wings, building a flat weave that slowly curved upwards, I then added the red and threaded another balloon through the middle, the last thing to do with the wings was to add the yellow feathers.

Next I made the body which it just 4 x 260s wrapped around a 350, adding in the wings at the same time. I then made the head and neck adding in the crest and beak and then the eyes. The last thing to do was to add the tail and legs.

1st April - Easter Bonnet

I had a recent request from my sister to make an Easter bonnet for my little niece Erica, all my nieces and nephews are entering an Easter bonnet parade today and my sister thought it would be a good idea for Erica to have a balloon bonnet.

This photo is NOT a picture of my niece, I decided to use my bear as a model for the bonnet instead, Erica is not quite as hairy as this. The Easter bonnet is in 2 parts, firstly the hat part, it is made from 11 balloons, I started with a flower weave for the main base and then added the outer rim, all I needed to do next was add the flowers around the edge.

The little duckling on top is one of the designs from Dylan Gelinas, he is called Hiccup the duck and is available from Dylans website at http://www.slightlytwistedballoons.com.
